Adventures in Work Experience
Matrix has been a real seat of learning this week. Our new programmer Jamie is learning at an impressive rate, and Andrew our apprentice is approaching the completion of his qualifications ahead of schedule.
This week we were joined by Luke who was on his work experience placement from Christ the King College. He has had a busy week, and learned lots.
We started out with the goal of Luke building a website. He is very interested in the Isle of Wight Festival, and he came up with the idea of building a website for the iconic 1970 festival.
Day 1 Luke spent sketching design ideas and wireframing the site
Day 2 was spent putting the designs together in Photoshop
Day 3 Luke spent the morning working his way through some HTML tutorials, and then was straight into the build
Day 4 was filled with lots of building
Day 5 should have been a stroll in the park just tidying up and testing, but we gave him some other work to do to help out!
You can check out the 1970 Festival website as built by Luke at http://www.matrixcreate.com/1970/

Happy 25th Birthday WWW!
I heard a couple of people chatting on the radio this morning. They seemed to be talking down the impact of the World Wide Web over the past 25 years, which I was kind of staggered by.
Fact of the matter is, that Sir Tim Berners-Lee came up with an idea that has changed the world - forever. It was his simple concept in March 1989, to use networks to publish information, and view it from other computers, using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
The first pages were pretty basic, and appeared in slow motion, but here is a brief run down on what happened since then.
1993 - the Mosaic browser was released.
1995 saw the released of Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Opera.
1995 - JavaScript came along. It made webpages a whole lot more interesting!
1995-2000 - the Dot Com boom gathered pace, and businesses and investors realised the potential of the web.
1996 - Two Stanford students start a project to crawl the web, and formulate a PageRank for the pages they discovered. In 1998 Google was founded.
A succession of social networking tools came along, including forums, sites like Friendster, LinkedIn and Myspace, until...
2004 - Facebook arrived. It started at Harvard, spread quickly through universities in the US, and became universally available in 2006.
2007 - as if the momentum behind websites like Facebook was not strong enough, in 2007 Apple gave us the iPhone and the web really went mobile.
Today, the web is part of everyday life in much of the world. Many businesses are dead in the water without success in Google, many peoples jobs exist only in the web, the web is an essential part of our children's education, we use the web as a delivery tool for much of our entertainment and it is where many communicate with friends, family, colleagues and customers.
The WWW in numbers:
There is in the region of 700 million websites
2.4 billion people world wide access the internet
There are around 1.3 billion Facebook users, and each day nearly half of them log in
In 2013, 73% of adults in Britain accessed the internet every day
72% of adults in Britain bought something on the internet in 2013
I don't know about you, but I think this world wide web thing could just take off.
Happy Birthday!

Farewell to a busy 2013
2013 was a very busy year at Matrix.
We utilised our property portal technology to deliver a new website Advertiser Property, for the Maidenhead Advertiser, which represents the properties of a wide range of estate agents in the area.
A highlight among the local websites we produced was a fresh new website for one of the Isle of Wight's favourite tourist attractions - The Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
The Isle of Wight Festival website got a new look, and we have been tackling maybe our most challenging project ever, both logistically and technically, for the Isle of Wight County Press, all will be revealed in 2014!
That's just a taste of the many many many things that we have tackled in the studio in another fun year :)

The popular W Hurst and Sons e-Commerce store has had an update and re-design, and the new store is proving a hit.
We have just produced a new website for startup Audio Visual and Home Automation specialists Campbell Elliot.
Our lead Creative Nick was particularly pleased with the design work for Island Foods, the Isle of Wight Meat specialists.
We have also completed another website in the family of websites for AJ Wells and Sons. We have already produced sites for the companies range of Wood Burning Stoves, and have now added a website for their extensive range of Vitreous Enamelling services.

Summer work round-up
The weather may have put a dampener on the British summer, but there are still busy bees at work in the Matrix studio.
Colville Care are a care provider on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire. They asked Matrix to carry out a re-branding project for them, including logo, brochures, advertising, company website, signage and vehicle livery. We are very pleased with the results.
The Royal Hotel is one of the premier Isle of Wight Hotels. We have worked with the Royal for many years, and are proud to have launched a newly designed and developed website.
Low Power Solutions is a brand new website, offering a range of innovative / green and emergency products for sale on the web. We are looking forward to trying the hot pack meals!
We recently completed a very exciting project for Gurit. This was to produce a sophisticated interactive presentation for them to take to trade shows. The presentation is designed to work on touchscreens and has been a real hit.
The team have also been hard at work with the team at the County Press, developing a mobile version of the website. Hit the County Press website on your mobile to take a look.
The bees are still busy, with a whole new batch of websites that are also set for launch.

New websites from the Matrix studio
After a busy summer in the Matrix studio, the team are happy to unveil a selection of new web work.
Dimbola.co.uk is the home of the Julia Margaret Cameron Trust, and the smart new design is the latest in a collection of successful charity websites built by Matrix.
The new Charnwood website for AJ Wells and sons, has been a long time in production, but we think the results were well worth the wait. Charnwood is a leading UK producer of wood burning stoves.
The Owl and Monkey Haven is the latest Isle of Wight attraction. The haven made an award winning start last year, and now has a website to celebrate it's success.
Matrix has worked with RF Engines for many years, and was pleased to put the final touches to the new www.rfel.com website.
We've also been busy with some branding work, and are waiting for some packaging designs for a food company to hit the supermarkets next week.

New CMS launches with Gurit website
The Matrix development team has been very busy over the last 6 months, putting together a complete overhaul of our CMS, which has gone live to deliver a fantastic new website for Gurit. Fangle 3 has arrived, and sees a real shake up to the workings of our Content Management System, with the emphasis on moving away from the reliance of those quirky HTML editors that we all love, to a much more modular and template based approach to each page. Ultimately this gives much more control to our clients, and makes the CMS much easier to use. The Gurit website has been a big project, incorporating an attractive and clean looking design. The new CMS has helped Gurit to take control of the large amount of content that the website needs to present.

10 Years in, it's time to evolve
It's a new start to the year and a new direction for Matrix.
Now entering it's 10th year of business Matrix has specialised in web design, delivering the very highest standard in website design and development for a wide client base, from small start up businesses to the dizzy heights of large global brands.
Over the years we have continued to grow and adapt… and over time we have evolved. No longer can an agency simply build a "nice" website, or design a "pretty" brochure. We have to do more than that… We have to look at how brands communicate to their customers through 'User Experiences' and use Social Networking effectively.
So at the start of the year we set the wheels in motion to develop Matrix, to talk our clients (and prospective new ones) about what can be expected from Matrix through out 2011.
We have bulked up in size, adding 2 new members to the already solid Matrix Team, Paul Yendley is our new web designer who specialises in CSS development and JavaScript, and Nick Dover who has come on board as our first in house designer and brand specialist.
As the title says new year, new start. With this in mind we have taken this opportunity to transform MatrixeBusiness. First of all by changing our name to Matrix Create… With the new name and diverse skill set we wanted to expand our services, attracting a new audience, whilst maintaining our existing. Shifting our market perception to a full service design agency whilst firmly keeping our roots in what we know best - The Web. Explore our website to find out more about our Graphic Design services.
Also new this year is Matrix Play. This is something that the team at Matrix felt strongly they wanted to do. This is time that the whole Matrix team set aside out of our free time, to look at cool new things - time to play! This time will be a refreshing change from the day to day pressures of meeting deadlines, and will allow the team to develop. As we develop, we will of course be looking to offer these new specialisms to you, our valued customers :)
So with that let's start the count down to the Matrix Birthday and let play time begin!

The Matrix has been upgraded
December and January has seen some significant changes in the Matrix team.
We are pleased to welcome aboard Paul Yendley as our Junior Web Designer / Developer. Paul has a keen interest in all things design, but also has strong set of technical skills. He has quickly got up to speed and is already getting stuck into the build aspects of various website projects at Matrix.
Just before Christmas, we were very pleased to welcome Nick Dover into the fold. Matrix and Nick go back a long way, with Nick having previously had a successful spell of work experience with us back in 2005. Since then he has been a busy boy, having worked for a couple of design agencies and having gathered a wealth of hands on skills and industry experience.
Nick now adds a real creative edge to the Matrix team. His skills will add a fresh fel to our online design work, but also sees us add design for print services to our offering.
Welcome aboard Gentlemen, it already feels like it;s going to be a lot of fun...
